Singer Bette Midler was branded a "racist," according to the Daily Mail, for going to social media to mock Melania Trump's accent, calling her an "illegal alien" and lamenting how she hadn't learned English.
The reaction was swift and powerful, and mostly one direction.
So hours later, Midler posted sort of an apology.

But Midler left unaddressed her charge about the nation's first lady being an "illegal alien" and her charge that she hadn't learned English. In fact, Melania Trump's first language is Slovenian, and she also speaks English, French, Italian and German.
She addressed the Republican National Convention this week, triggering Midler.
"Oh, God. She still can’t speak English," Midler wrote on Twitter.

The Hill reported Midler was "ripped" on Twitter.
The report noted Trump was born and raised in Yugoslavia before coming to the U.S., and she "implored Americans to reelect" her husband.

The New York Post said Midler's attack was "below the belt" and "unhinged."
