In early results Tuesday night – with about one-third of U.S. Senate seats on the ballot and the majority up for grabs – Democrats have retained a seat in Vermont, with Peter Welch the projected winner. Republicans has retained two seats so far, with victories by Tim Scott in South Carolina and Rand Paul in Kentucky.
In the 50-50 Senate, various polls predict Republicans will end up with anywhere from 51 to 55 seats and retake the majority. Democrats took control of the Senate in January 2021 with two-runoff victories in Georgia.
One of the winners in 2021 Georgia, Sen. Rafael Warnock, who is completing the term of Republican Johnny Isakson, is in a tight race with Republican challenger Herschel Walker.
With 29% of the vote counted, Warnock leads 55.8 to 42.7.
In Florida, incumbent Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has a 12-point lead over impeachment manager Rep. Val Demings, with about 72% of the vote counted.
