(REPUBLIC BRIEF) – Brazil appeared to take a sharp turn left as the former president of the country, communist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, seemingly beat out conservative incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in that country’s election.

In a divisive campaign featuring two bitter rivals on opposing sides of the political spectrum, Lula won 50.9% of the vote. But something wasn’t right.
