A number of states dispatched mail-in ballots to every voter in their state during the 2020 presidential contest, and that action gave rise to a number of complaints about fraud, with among other issues, some dead voters returning ballots.
Foreign citizens living in the U.S. also got the ballots.
Now a columnist in USA Today has expressed the idea that that's a really good thing.
In fact, the idea of foreigners voting in American elections is "rooted in both American tradition and ideals," the columnist charged.
It was a report at Breitbart that explained the perspective of Raul A. Reyes.
He claimed noncitizens "should be allowed to vote."
He praised a recent vote by the New York city council to allow "inclusion and representation" of foreigners, by allowing them to vote in local elections.
"Allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections is smart policy that is legally sound. It will strengthen communities and give more residents an investment in politics that affect their daily lives. And allowing noncitizens to vote is rooted in both American tradition and ideals," he claimed.
And he explained, "There are about 15 million legal non-residents in the country and about 800,000 in New York City. These are our neighbors who pay taxes, send their children to public schools, start businesses and contribute to their communities. They should be able to elect leaders and have a say in local politics just like anyone else."
Noncitizens already were being allowed to vote in local elections in some locations. And Reyes claimed a New York state constitutional provision that "every citizen shall be entitled to vote" does not mean noncitizens cannot vote.
Breitbart's report noted Reyes blasted Republicans who have "no legal or moral standing to whine about protecting the right to vote" over their opposition to the move.
New York GOP chief Nick Langworthy said the vote by Democrats to give foreigners the vote in New York City was "irresponsible" and would be fought as an "attack on our election integrity."
