Federal officials have, over the last year and a half, offered conflicting advice over whether Americans should wear masks because of the COVID-19 pandemic multiple times.
They're going back to recommending them now, according to reports.
Only weeks after the Centers for Disease Control said in May that vaccinated individuals weren't required to wear them indoors or outdoors – or even physically distance, Fox News is reporting the government bureau is saying starting now there are circumstances when they are needed.
Specifically students, vaccinated or unvaccinated, in schools this fall. And anyone indoors in COVID hot spots.
The change in advice was confirmed to Fox by a federal source, the report said.
In May, the CDC said masks still were needed in some situations, such as on public transportation and in hospitals.
The new guidance, set to be formalized on Tuesday, comes just as President Biden is escalating warnings about a variant of COVID-19, the catastrophically dangerous virus now thought by many experts to have originated in the Wuhan, China, lab that does research on "gain of function" in viruses, and has been funded partly by grants from American taxpayers.
CDC chief Rochelle Walensky has claimed the Delta variant is "spreading with incredibly efficiency and now represents more than 83% of the virus circulation in the Untied States."
The White House – and virtually all other state and federal agencies – have been urgently insisting that anyone who is not vaccinated should be "fearful," and get vaccinated immediately.
The campaigns don't mention the thousands of negative results, including deaths, that have followed shortly after Americans take a vaccine shot.
The lobbying has included Walensky, who said recently, "We need more people to get vaccinated to stop this pandemic."
Masking should always be a consideration, she said.
"If you are unvaccinated, if you are vaccinated, you get exceptional protection from the vaccines, but you have the opportunity to make the personal choice to add extra layers of protection if you so choose," Walensky said.
Politicians have escalated the rhetoric so far as to make unsubstantiated accusations that the unvaccinated are a threat.
About half of Americans by now have been fully vaccinated with the still-experimental shots that were developed in record time under the urging of President Trump to drug companies.
Some local governments jumped out ahead of the CDC, resurrecting their face mask requirements ahead of the federal guidance.
A CBS report explained the recommendation for a return to masks is for "places with substantial or high transmission."
There already have been thousands of people who have confirmed being infected – after being fully vaccinated. There even have been reported dozens of deaths among this population.
Federal experts have variously advised for – or against – masks as the COVID pandemic moved out of China and around the world, killing millions, even though the effectiveness of many cloth coverings has been questioned.
