President Biden's chiding of Coast Guard graduates as a "dull class" for not laughing at his poorly delivered joke was widely reported Wednesday.

It turns out that Biden borrowed the line from President Reagan, who drew cheers when he delivered it during a U.S. Coast Guard Academy commencement address in 1988, as a video that went viral Wednesday illustrates.

Biden spoke to the graduating cadets Wednesday in New London, Connecticut.

"I can only assume that you'll enjoy educating your family about how the Coast Guard is quote 'The hard nucleus around the Navy forms in times of war,'" Biden said.

Silence followed.

"You're a really dull class. Come on, man. Is the sun getting to you?"

Some pundits on Twitter pointed out Reagan was 77 when he delivered the joke in 1988, his last year in office. Biden, in his first year, is 78.

"My Coast Guard aides have been excellent," Reagan said. "One of them taught me that, and I quote, 'The Coast Guard is that hard nucleus about which the Navy forms in time of war.'"
